FOR THE FIRST TIME LEVEL OF TRANSPARENCY OF COMPANIES IN RUSSIA WAS EVALUATED

For the first time, Transparency Index was presented in Russia for the purpose of evaluation of the companies’ transparency level. The initiator of the research was Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility Development (Ukraine, further – Centre) that had already presented Transparency Indexes of international and Ukrainian companies on the basis of Beyond Business (Israel) methodology.

Centre’s analytics had evaluated the web-sites of 100 largest companies in Russia from different sectors on 4 basic criteria: non-financial reporting, level of information disclosure on the key CSR spheres, access to information, potential availability of the web-site (language, contacts, etc.).

As a result, Rosneft was named the most transparent company with the result of 164 points from 200 available, and level of the company’s transparency is 84%. For comparison, the best result among companies from Fortune Global 500 was shown by General Electric – 93,5% transparency (187 points).

All companies, included to the Index top-10 have non-financial reports that were prepared according to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standard. The average transparency rate was 69,8% – only 9,1% less than the average rate of CSR information disclosure among 10 largest world companies from the  Fortune Global 500 list (their rate is 78,9%).

Evaluating the results as a whole, it is worth to note that companies in Russia are very active  in the implementation of CSR  and disclosure of this information on their websites. The average disclosure rate  was 32%, which is only 3% less than the same rate of the largest companies in Israel, where the index is being held for the third consecutive year. Most companies have a separate page on CSR at their web-sites -  55 companies placed the CSR page section at the homepage. The most detailed subject matter  disclosed (disclosure of information – 52%) is the sphere of relations with the consumers of goods and services.

The most transparent sector in the CSR sphere among companies in Russia are the representatives of oil and gas companies, average rate of which is 51,5%. This is 5,2% more than the heavy industry enterprises (average rate – 46,3%). It is worth to note that Index top-10, mostly, consists of the companies from these two sectors (9 companies). The least  transparent were the companies that represent  the retail sector – 17.5%.

Maryna Saprykina, Head of the Board, Centre for CSR Development, noted: “It is positive that companies in Russia pay much attention to the quality of CSR information disclosure and non-financial reporting. However, companies still need to work on the quality of CSR activity and placement of the results at their web sites. Centre for CSR Development hopes that, thanks to the Transparency Index, we will help companies to arrange their CSR activities”.

From 2012, Centre for CSR Development starts the process of consulting for companies on arrangement of CSR information at their web sites.
