December 15, Kyiv – Centre for CSR Development had organized an Award ceremony of the National CSR Business Case Contest. The event was supported by general partner Ernst&Young, Better World partner SUN InBev Ukraine, mobile partner MTS Ukraine and communication partner – ESG.

Natalia Telenkova, Head of corporate social responsibility committee, Ernst&Young: “Contest, which is held for the third time, shows that business in Ukraine does not only understand the appropriateness of social and environmental components of the development strategy, but is also ready to report on the systematic steps in this direction. The most important effect, which we expect to get, is increasing numbers of companies involved in solving of social problems, and seeing real benefits for themselves in these activities”.

More than 40 socially responsible practices of Ukrainian companies have passed strict evaluation of the 10 international CSR experts from 9 countries. Business cases had positive feedback from the jury and received international recognition.“I was really impressed of the cases from Ukraine. They demonstrate good understanding of CSR principles and nice practices. I am sure that demonstration of such works would give inspiration and practical aid for other companies. I was especially impressed by the cases in “Labor relations” nomination – they demonstrate maturity of sustainable development approaches”, – says Elaine Cohen, international non-financial reporting expert (Israel). David Connor, managing director of the European division of the website 3blmedia.com (Great Britain) had noted about the case of the winner – Auchan: “Excellent case with demonstration of the leadership and partnerships that work. Impressive scale of impact. The issue is very important for the organization”. Laura Franceschini, Stanec (Canada) sustainable development coordinator had noted: “Detailed description of the problem in Ukraine. In the case, we can see the relation between solution of the problem and company’s sustainable development”.

Practices that won in the contest, undoubtedly, represent the progress and pride of Ukrainian business. You can get acquainted with all business cases in the book “CSR Practices – 2011”:

Victoria Ruban, Head of public relations department, MTS Ukraine:“Business is able to conduct business effectively and make money, but today, the factor of responsibility of this business becomes increasingly important. For us, the responsibility lies in the application of innovative technologies and development, which we offer for our clients, and in social spheres, for which commercial decisions are not available yet, but are vital as well. We are pleased that more and more companies base their activities on the principles of responsible business. This is also the merit of such platforms for the exchange of experience as National CSR Business Case Contest that is held by the Centre for CSR Development for the third year and is becoming a good tradition.”

Participants of the event had the possibility to discuss the impact of European CSR Strategy on Ukrainian business. The vision of Polish CSR priorities was presented by PavelGebski, economic issues advisor of the Embassy of Poland to Ukraine. The workshop, where the best business cases were presented, became a real platform for experience exchange.

Summarizing the results of the Contest, Maryna Saprykina had noted: “Each year, companies’ cases become more systematic and strategically determined. Each practice is not just an effective business tool, but an example of economic potential and investment attractiveness of our country. On its basis, we can tell about integration of Ukrainian business to the international business community. Today, the question “Do companies need CSR?” is not urgent; the topic of the day is how to integrate CSR to the business strategy.”
